Your ref: M18117/12

Thank you so much for your kind letter of 6 December, on behalf of the Prime Minister. I am heartened to hear what you say about the government’s recognition of the scale of the problems support groups like ours are dealing with, and the important work we are doing, but I wondered if you fully appreciate the funding crisis we are all facing at the present time. I know that NAPAC, which you mention, will run out of funds at the end of this year, and we will also run out of funds next March, when a small grant from our PCT finishes.

We have not received any core funding from government since 2009, when we received £50,000 (the capped amount) from the Combined Fund (Home Office and Equalities Office), and in January of last year, we received £29,000 from the Cabinet Office’s Transition Fund, but that was to help us develop a GP training programme, not to fund overheads.

Much of the work we have done for the past 10 years has been through voluntary effort, but we need hard funds to pay for overheads and other running costs, if we are to continue. We have done a lot of work for the prison service, also on an unfunded basis, as is evidenced in the attached letter from HMP Buckley Hall, and we continue to support prisoners who have been released, as is evidenced by the attached letter from Merseyside Police, but the Ministry of Justice has always refused to fund us.

We were already inundated with victims seeking our support before the recent flood of new allegations emerging out of the Savile and Bryn Alyn cases, and we are working closely with of some the new victims of those cases, and also with the MET and North Wales Police.

All of this work will have to stop in March 2013, unless we are able to access government funding, so could you ask the Prime Minister to find some funding for us to continue, or tell us how he expects us to continue to support victims without government funding?

I look forward to your reply.

With all best wishes

Yours sincerely
